Middlemount is a complete suburb nestled in the Brigalow country of Central Queensland. A comfortable 1½ hours drive from Emerald and 3 hours from Rockhampton and Mackay, Middlemount offers the traveller a home away from home.
Summer temperatures are very warm and swimming at the Olympic size pool is a favourite past time.
During the cooler months Middlemount comes alive with annual events. Starting with the Labour Day Picnic held on the first Sunday in May and continuing through to Race Day on the third Saturday in August and to the Police Charity Golf Day in October.
Middlemount is only 20 years old and is a purpose-built coal mining town. The town services Capcoal's Central Colliery, Southern Colliery and Open Cut, and Foxleigh's Open Cut.The community enjoys schooling from kindergarten to grade 12, a medical centre, a hotel/motel, a shopping centre, a caravan park, many well equipped parks, restaurants, golf course and other great sporting facilities.
Our 'Jewel in the Crown' - Blue Mountain Park - provides free barbecue facilities and panoramic views of the surrounding areas. Many evenings there are wallabies feeding in the park and the bird life is spectacular, including galahs, kookaburras, blue mountain
parrots and rainbow lorikeets. Middlemount has many other parks and all are equipped for fun for the younger people.Need time away from the kitchen? There are different styles of eateries available in Middlemount. At the Golf Club there is a very amenable Chinese Restaurant which is open from Wednesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner. On Friday nights the Bowls Club offers a bistro style menu at very reasonable prices.
The Oasis Bistro provides different menus on different nights and has a very amiable atmosphere. The local Hotel has a dining room with an extensive a la carte menu. They also provide take away meals on Friday nights. Take aways are available from the Roadhouse, Chino & Burger Bar, the Pizza Shop or the Sports Café located at the
Middlemount Multi-sports Centre.Local Bundoora Dam is stocked with a variety of fish to please the angler. The fishing is also worthwhile at the Isaacs, Mackenzie and Connors Rivers - all within one hours travelling time.
The Middlemount Golf Course is an oasis for golfers who battle to get time on city courses. The local course has 9 holes and the greens are glorious. Relax at the Club House after the game!The local rural industry incorporates grazing and crop production. In season, you can see spectacular sunflower fields and flowing sorghum paddocks.
Capcoal operates three underground mines and an open cut mine which all produce premium quality hard coking coal for export steel markets. The majority of coal is mined from the German Creek Formation, noted for containing hard coking coal of exceptionally high quality. The German Creek Sequence contains five coal seam intervals known as the German Creek, Corvus, Tieri, Aquila and Pleiades seams. See the Region Map showing Mine and Town Locations!
Capcoal is located in the heart of the Bowen Basin in central Queensland and is within a comfortable driving distance of the major regional centres of Emerald, Rockhampton, Mackay and the tropical coast. Our employees enjoy life in nearby Middlemount, a modern well-equipped township offering good educational and sporting facilities.
Annual Production: Capcoal mines 11.8 Mt of coal each year to produce in excess of 8.5 Mt of prime quality hard coking coal.
Reserves: Mining leases controlled by Capcoal cover 27,343 hectares and estimated resources exceed one billion tonnes with insitu mineable reserves of 125 Mt.
Coal Processing: Run-of-mine (ROM) coal is processed in a centrally located Coal Handling and Preparation Plant prior to being transported by rail to the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal for export.
Customers: Coal is exported to steel manufacturing customers in Asia- East, Asia-South, Asia-West, Europe and Latin America
Number of Employees: Capcoal employs approximately 600 people.
The new Bundoora mine is being constructed to augment raw coal production and to ensure long term stable production of high quality coal at German Creek is available.
Lake Lindsay is an open cut mine, adjacent to German Creek which is due to come on line in late 2006.
